Our values, policies and protocols

At openDemocracy, we are…

Accountable
We always seek to act ethically and with integrity. We’re publicly transparent about our aims, funding and affiliations. If we make mistakes, we take responsibility and learn from them.

Independent
We are not beholden to any faction or vested interest. We encourage rebellious, creative, independent thinking.

Excellent
We always strive to do journalism that is accurate, evidence-based and compelling. We set ourselves high standards, and we continually ask if we are being ambitious enough.

Agile
We seek to be nimble and innovative in a fast-changing world.

Collaborative
We’re part of a global independent media ecosystem that we want to support and grow. Wherever possible, we prioritise collaboration over competition. We value working with and learning from others who share our goals.

Pluralist
We value diversity of perspective, culture and lived experience. We resist groupthink and we encourage debate. We are plural but not neutral: we call out injustice and oppression – but we listen to competing ideas about how to address them.

Intersectional
We are feminist, anti-racist, we challenge all forms of unjust power or discrimination. And we invest in leadership, training, mentoring and learning from underrepresented groups – because if we change the media, we change the debate.

Independence and transparency
