Bruce Pannier studied Central Asia at Columbia University, New York under the legendary scholar Edward Allworth. In 1992–93, he led a sociological research project in villages in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, and has been a frequent visitor to the region since then. He has worked for the Open Media Research Institute, Prague (1995–97) and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (1997–2022). Pannier has written for BNE IntelliNews, The Cairo Review, The Diplomat, The Economist Intelligence Unit, Eurasianet, the Foreign Policy Research Institute, Freedom House, FSU Oil & Gas Monitor and Janes.
